Tomorrow, I’m Ready

Tomorrow, we’ll finally know who’s valedictorian, salutatorian and the honorable mentions. Knowing that it will betomo rrow, I can’t help but feel tense and depressed for the past 2 weeks. I’ve always been the 2nd honor, so you’d probably know how hard it will be for me to see that I’ve gotten lower in the rankings.

But after much reflection I understood that whatever is given to me, I should accept. And if it is not as I want it to be, I should not be sad at all because I know that I did my best and worked so hard (you all are witnesses with what I have been blogging about in the past few months – school). And since I did my best, there’s nothing to feel guilty about.

Instead of breaking my heart for something I haven’t seen yet, I decided that I will use this week to smile and be my normal self with my friends. I don’t want them to feel down because of me, nor do I want that myself. And besides, all my hard work and hopes, they would not be wasted no matter what. This is because all my hard work, in spite of my mistakes and faults, I lift up to God and not anymore to my own satisfaction.

So tomorrow, I’m ready. But of course, I’m praying and hoping that I would become salutatorian. Right now, my thoughts are put into these three sentences:

“I worked with all my might. I prayed with all my heart. The rest I leave to God!”

These are the words of Cory Aquino when she was President. I know I haven’t prayed much but the time I have left before the announcement I should put into prayer.

  1. No offense to some people, but I kinda find people being arrogant if they whine and cry that they didn’t win 1st Place/1st Honor or whatever, because in reality, how you do in your studies is what measures your placement, pretty much. In other words, you got no one to blame but yourself, you know? In addition, regardless if you do end up being 1st place, there is always someone out there who is better than you. There’s no such person as being the best in the world, but there is such person who is better than you (and there is such person who is also better than that person better than you… and so on and so forth).

And here’s another reality fact as well. Even the dumbest people in high school could also become the most successful people right after high school, and that includes going through colleges. Some “dumb people” do a lot better in college since eventually they’ll find something that interests them and would like to work in that particular field. And because of their high interests in that specific field, they’ll work very hard to make it in that field and earn their degree in that field. Their interests can seriously boost up their confidence with their studies and eventually earn high honors.

I’d ask you this though. What would you do (or how would you feel?) if you didn’t become Salutatorian or even an Honorable Mention?

    • hm… since I’m expected by others to have it, if I don’t I’d probably cry. T_T. But maybe for only a while.

And you’re right! Right about that! There’s still college to work harder for. I should take things easy right now.

      • Exactly. High school isn’t going to determine how your future is going to be like. It’s all about college. High School just teaches you the general basics preparing you for college. College is not like partying through a breeze and then say you passed with high grades. It’s a whole lot more than just that.

As for people who may pressure you to do your best, they have expectations for you because they expect you to have your soul in to studying and pour your soul in to making it big. However, what they don’t realize is that each person can only have so much for them to be able to succeed. They can’t expect you to have superpowers to gain as much knowledge as you can and do really good in grades. Some people weren’t born to have the capacity to learn things quickly or even at an average speed and need a lot more special methods in order for them to learn and succeed. That kind of thing.

Either way, I say congratulations for making it through high school. At least you’re graduating. Some students won’t be able to due to poor grades and other circumstances.

I will admit. I didn’t get any of those Valedictorian/Salutatorian/Honorable Mention-types of honors. In U.S. high schools, we only get a Valedictorian, a Salutotorian, Summa Cum Laude (“With Highest Honor”) students, Magna Cum Laude (“With Great Honor”) students, Cum Laude (“With Honors”) students, and the rest of the students. I was a Cum Laude in high school but I did a whole lot better in college (Summa Cum Laude). And another thing, depending on the job you’re applying for, if you’re applying in to more higher-salaried jobs, they’ll look in to your college experience first before high school.

  2. It’s okay if you don’t get the highest award, just think that you are lucky that you are still being recognized for the hard work you have done. It’s not bad to dream big; but at the same time, remember that many people aren’t that fortunate to receive those kinds of awards so you will still have to thank God for whatever you have 🙂

    • thanks claudine!
